Linguistic Architecture of the Gujarati Script

The Gujarati alphabet (ગુજરાતી મૂળાક્ષરો / કક્કો) is an abugida script derived from the historical Brahmi family through the 16th-century Devanagari lineage. Unlike Devanagari, Gujarati script discarded the continuous horizontal top line (shirorekha), creating an elegant, open-topped script that was originally prized for rapid commercial bookkeeping and merchant correspondence (Mahajani lipi).

Every standalone consonant possesses an inherent short vowel sound /a/ (અ). When consonants merge with other vowels, the base letter is modified with a dependent vowel marker known as a Matra (માત્રા). To practice typing these letters phonetically, use our Gujarati Typing tool.
